My Journey to Super Village

Hello, I'm Guna Seelan, a Product Designer hailing from Kallal, in the Sivagangai District of Tamil Nadu.

The inception of this idea took place during the tumultuous first wave of COVID-19 in Chennai. Misinformation was rampant, mainly via platforms like WhatsApp. Although urban areas like Chennai had trusted information sources, I witnessed a significant disparity when I returned to my hometown.

In my village, the majority relied on WhatsApp for news, often sidelining the authenticity of the content. It was concerning to see my family, who were recent digital adopters, lost in the vast expanse of the internet. They were in search of knowledge and resources but often ended up amidst scattered and, sometimes, misleading information.

This spurred an idea: villages necessitated a centralized, reliable information hub. A space where communities could find details about transportation, jobs, government initiatives, educational content, and even a local directory—like locating a mechanic.

Being deeply entrenched in the world of design, I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone to bring this vision to life. I took it upon myself to learn new development skills, delving into React & NextJS. My goal was clear: to create a platform that was not only user-friendly but also high-performing. Keeping in mind the mid-range Android devices commonly used by villagers, it was essential to ensure easy navigation.

This wasn't just an information repository; it was about empowerment. I envisioned a transformed village—a self-reliant community where residents could upskill, innovate, and share their products and services with the broader world.

Thus, supervillage.in was born. This platform is a testament to my vision of nurturing self-reliance in villages, guiding them towards sustainability, and equipping them with accurate information.

Releasing this platform on October 2nd, Gandhi's birthday, holds a profound significance. Mahatma Gandhi believed in the concept of self-sufficient villages as the backbone of India.

His vision of Village Self-governance aligns perfectly with the mission of "supervillage.in." By empowering our villages with knowledge and resources, we are taking a step closer to realizing a self-reliant India.
